B.M.C.’s PureAmp is a Load-Effect Free (LEF) integrated Amplifier with an even higher level operation mode when combined with a PureDAC.

De PureAmp maakt B.M.C.’s PureLine compleet, volgend de zeer succesvolle PureDAC, de PureVox luidsprekers en de PureMedia.

De PureAmp levert 2 x100 Watt, in een stijlvolle aluminium behuizing welke een award heeft gekregen voor het design, naast de verlichting en de makkelijk afleesbare power meter.

De PureAmp heeft een ingebouwde optie welke automatisch omschakelt tussen zijn functie als geïntegreerde versterker met LEF technologie naar een krachtige eindversterker met de CI (Current Injection) technologie door simpelweg de PureAmp versterker op een B.M.C. DAC aan te sluiten. Vervolgens een extra digitale kabel ertussen zetten voor de B.M.C. link. Uiteraard mogen er ook andere merken DA-Converters gebruikt worden.

PureAmp

B.M.C. levert een versterker die natuurlijk en neutraal klinkt. Daarnaast biedt het innovatieve technologiën waaronder: LEF Amplification, Current Injection (CI) en Discrete Intelligent Gain Management (DIGM). Luisteraars horen een ongekende muzikale transparantie en dit alles tegen een redelijke prijs.
Daarbij komt nog dat de signaal wegen zo kort mogelijk zijn gehouden en wat opvalt is de afwezigheid van vervorming.
In plaats van vervorming te compenseren door gebruik te maken van negative feedback, voorkomt de PureAmp dit door het exclusieve LEF circuit.
Het is beter om vervorming te voorkomen dan om het later weer te moeten corrigeren.

PureAmp

Eigenaren kunnen gebruik maken van een ingebouwde upgrade door de Pure Amp te combineren met een B.M.C. DAC waardoor de Pure Amp als eindversterker gaat fungeren in “Current Injection mode”.

Waarbij de overige innovaties in de PureAmp gewoon hun werk blijven doen.

De PureAmp dynamische kracht en luidspreker controle zijn exceptioneel.
Hij levert 2x 100 Watt bij 8 ohm en 150W bij 4ohm. Een grote 300W transformator en 180.000uF energie voorraad maakt de PureAmp een krachtige versterker.
De versterker blijft koeler dan traditionele klasse A ontwerpen en is ook meer lineair dan traditionele klasse A versterkers.

Three Technologies

The PureAmp includes three technologies developed by and exclusive to B.M.C.:
  • Load Effect Free (LEF) Technology handles a speaker’s current demand separately from the voltage demand. This helps the amplifier achieve high output and high-quality reproduction.
    It provides a top-level signal without loading the signal transistors, thus avoids distortion and increases efficiency. The result is a level of musical complexity that brings to life delicate details, rock-shaking power, high dynamics, sonic vitality, and accurate imaging.
  • Current Injection (CI) Technology processes the input current from a signal source through a special XLR-CI input and the amplifier’s circuitry until it attains the desired output voltage for the loudspeakers, increasing the purity of the amplified signal and the immediacy of its musical reproduction, by skipping any gain stage and using an original source signal. 
  • Digital Intelligent Gain Management (DIGM) is a volume and amplification control system that recalibrates gain without dividing and downgrading the input signal. It lets users adjust left/right output balances in 66 1.5-decibel increments. It also avoids unnecessary attenuation of the input signal and excessive amplification, eliminates the need for a preamp circuit, and allows a DAC or other sound sources to directly connect to the amplifier. Less amplification means less distortion and noise, which leads to a more natural musical quality.

The PureVox is a balanced build speaker with bipolar architecture and it is unique in a number of ways.
The PureVox delivers an amazingly realistic sound-stage which isn’t possible utilizing conventional speaker concepts. This is because the speaker doesn’t seem to be the source of the music but instead the music is just semmst to be “in” the room. Every musician on this virtual stage can be pinpointed as if one were at a real event.

Bipolar Speaker

Most conventional speakers have good depth of image in the
center of the sound-stage, but much less so at the sides.
Responsible for this lack of realism are the distorted frequency responses outside of the speaker axis. By walking around any speaker it is easy to hear how the sound balance changes.
The PureVox’s quasi-bi-polar design dramatically improves the
sound-stage’s depth impression at the sides, making the soundstage more complete and realistic.

Multi-Layer Cabinet

The body of the PureVox’s cabinet is made of a single piece of extruded aluminum, with a varying thickness to reduce internal resonances. Several inside layers of a molten-in damping material and stabilization bars at the remaining resonance points make the cabinet perfectly quiet.
Its stiffness and the low internal energy loss are far better than any wooden cabinet construction.
The PureVox is also free of the effects of humidity and aging, and 27.2 kg (60lbs) per speaker is a statement of build quality.
The cabinet is sealed, eliminating the bass-reflex resonance that can sound like blowing air into an empty bottle. The power of the drivers and the cabinet’s low energy loss more than compensate for any loss of oomph in the sound.

The PureVox is a quasi-balanced speaker, which means the same driver set is on the front as is on the 45-degree angled rear of the top.
This includes two 6.9-inch Kevlar/fiberglass bass/midrange drivers in a quasi-bipolar configuration.

MCCI Signature

The MCCI Signature is a truly balanced, global-feedback-free, passively equalized moving-coil phono preamplifier with the exceptional Current Injection input and LEF single ended class-A output stages.
MCCI Signature

The vinyl disc, dinosaur of music recording formats, just barely survived the CD. Today, however, the quality of turntables, tonearms, and cartridges has increased to unprecedented levels, which analog-recording producers support by pressing higher-quality discs in limited quantities. This means new challenges as well as new opportunities for phono preamplifiers.

The only consistent way to process the delicate music signal from a moving-coil cartridge is with a balanced Current Injection (CI) input, as the cartridge’s signal is among the most sensitive an audio amplification circuit will encounter. Using CI, the current of the moving coil flows through the phono preamplifier, including the first half of the RIAA equalization. The result is a level of dynamics, impact, and spaciousness and a richness of color that surpass the performance of step-up transformers as well as the usual voltage inputs.

At the same time, Current Injection electrically damps the moving-coil cartridge by letting energy flow into the CI input, instead of eliminating it in a cartridge load resistor. Transformed energy sounds different than and superior to eliminated energy.

B.M.C.’s use of virtually distortion-free circuits with a Current Injection input and a Load-Effect Free output brings to listeners an advanced musical experience — exceptionally lifelike, open and natural.

Combining the CI input with a low-impedance moving-coil cartridge gives new meaning to the phrase “dynamic system.”

The B.M.C. MCCI Signature is a balanced, passively equalized moving coil (MC) preamplifier lacking negative feedback. It features natural distortion-free and Load-Effect Free single-ended Class A output and a Current Injection input, which optimally reads the signal current of the moving coil pick-up.

The MC System at CI Current Input Compared with Voltage Input

When amplifying a signal from an MC pick-up, the interaction between the MC pick-up and the input is a critical element, as is optimal utilization of the very fine MC signal. Let us compare the traditional voltage input with the CI current input in terms of signal strength, damping, and amplification:

1. Signal Strength:

Comparing Moving Magnet (MM) and Moving Coil (MC) Cartridges at voltage and current Inputs MM cartridges have the advantage, at the voltage amplifier input, with an output voltage almost ten times higher than MC pick-ups. It is the other way round at the CI input: MC pick-ups can provide up to ten times higher currents than MM systems. Consequently, an MC system is the stronger not the weaker system at the CI current input.

2. Damping an MC Pick-Up as an Oscillating System

A phono pick-up cartridge is an oscillating electro-mechanical system. At a voltage input, the pick-up signal will be read, but the pick-up emits practically no energy to the amplifier circuit. With a high-impedance input, the oscillation energy of an MC pick-up stays undamped and is especially noticeable in the high-frequency range. Cartridge loading resistors are connected parallel to the input to damp these oscillations. Energy is always destroyed in these resistors, so trimming a system is a compromise: The resistance must be low enough to damp system oscillations to a bearable level yet high enough for the system not to sound completely de-energized.

At the other end of the transmission path, with an amplifier driving the speakers, there is good reason not to use an amplifier with a high-impedance output, and to connect parallel resistors to damp the natural oscillation of the speakers. Power amplifiers which simultaneously drive the speakers and, through low-impedance, dampen their oscillations, are a well established standard which makes perfect sense: Driving and damping the speaker as an oscillating, electro-mechanical system go hand in hand.

Making the amplifier input low-impedance is unusual but makes perfect sense with the MC input: Signal processing and damping the oscillating electro- mechanical system through an amplifier input allows the MC system’s energy to flow as current into the input. Energy is discharged this way but not destroyed. In fact, it is used for signal amplification and to create a vitality not previously heard.

3. Use of the Original Input Signal Current

The fine original current that the MC system feeds into the low-impedance CI input flows right through the amplification stage. At its end is a defined signal voltage through the termination. The termination can be a simple resistor, or with PHONO, a part of the RIAA filter network. At the CI circuit output, you can find the same electrons that are fed into the input. The original signal is used instead of a copy. In this way, the very delicate, finely tuned MC signal experiences the most sensitive method of amplification, and is conserved in all its richness and tonal diversity.

The Current Injection Circuit:

The Current Injection input circuit is a remarkable implementation of the principle of the common-base circuit. It is known for having the widest broadband, the least distortion, the best dynamics, and the most musical sound of the three base circuits, the benefit of not making a copy. CI is rather more like an I/V converter than an amplifier in the traditional sense.
The original current of a MC cartridge gets “injected” into a balanced static system of currents, and the first amplified signal is made from the original current, virtually lossless. This way the MCCI turns the weakest point of a phono MC amplifier into a very low loss processing stage. Dynamic losses and distortions are remarkably lower compared to common voltage amplifiers.
Beside this remarkable advantage the first RIAA pole is done by making this I/V conversion stage frequency dependet and thus combining the advantage of a passive RIAA without the need of excess gain.
The MCCI has a low-impedance input. Fortunately, the circuit is a perfect match for MC pick-ups and D/A converters, our best audiophile sources. For decades, some of the best MC amplifiers in the world have used the common-base circuit. However, only balanced input independent from the electrical ground allow the MC cartridge to be coupled directly with a common-base circuit without risk or comprises. The Current Injection circuit, compared with traditional circuits, significantly reduces dynamic loss, and signal distortion and discoloration.

LEF Output Stage:

Because the Current Injection circuit has a high-impedance output, a stable buffer is required to drive the load. Seen dynamically, there is no alternative to single-ended amplifiers, which run in Class-A drive. In a Load-Effect Free drive, the single-ended Class-A transistor, which is decisive for the sound, is freed from the work of driving the load. This is why we say it is Load-Effect Free. The quality goes through the natural lack of distortion up and above the classical Class-A mode, and therefore eliminate the need for negative feedback.

Truly Balanced Circuit:

In balanced Class-A mode, the supply voltage is not modulated through the music signal. One must keep Phono in mind. The output of a phono-amplifier produces a few volts at high levels, but the input has a sensitivity in the μVolt area. The balanced Class-A mode leads to a distinct increase in the inner tranquillity of the sound pattern, leaving more room for fine details, dynamic leaps, relaxation of the performance, and three-dimensional spatial illustration. In other words, an intense, in-depth music listening experience.

RIAA Equalization and Adjustment Options:MCCI Signature Frequency Response

Because all B.M.C. analog circuits work without negative feedback, there is no “active” equalization for the RIAA specification. For a precise RIAA correction, the equalization takes place in a passive manner in two stages uncoupled from each other, which calls for a frequency-dependent current/voltage converter. The B.M.C. MCCI PHONO combines the neutrality of passive filtering with the avoidance of unnecessary amplification.

The classic RIAA equalization is wrong because when cutting there is no endless rise in the high tones as they are corrected. Correction takes place In the PHONO MCCI with the help of the Quasi Industrial Standard of disk-cutting lathes by the Georg Neumann company. Music made following this standard simply possesses more air and openness. One can deactivate the Neumann correction and easily hear its advantages.

It is even possible to slightly raise the lowest deep bass as well as the “warmness” level to correct recording errors or slightly bass-poor pick-up/pick-up arm combinations.

Ideally the cartridge should match to the tonearm and the system should be well damped. In other cases a soft subsonic-filter can be selected.

Although the gain between different cartridges differs less than usual, according to the construction of the MC there might be level differences. Phono-MCCI allows the setting of 3 different gain levels.

Phono-MCCI’s very special transistors feature a super high Hfe and a super low typical noise figure of 0.3dB which is at the limit of today’s possibilities. Each functional group uses 10 in parallel which reduces the statistical noise by 10dB. There should hardly be any more quiet solution for a phono amplifier.

The “Balanced Current” electrolytic capacitors have a balanced characteristic for charge and discharge. The important ESR-bandwidth is far beyond common electrolytic capacitors. This results in an improved musical performance, precision, detail and beauty, starting from the very low frequency, covering the whole spectrum.

Induction-free Polystyrene capacitors feature the lowest losses of all film capacitors and show no resonances. Used in audio circuits they deliver very open and pleasant treble.

Metal-thin-film resistors with 0,5% tolerance represent the highest part level within this group. SMD types do not have clamped contact wires and show lowest inductance.

The core part is built on a fully gold plated 4-layer PCB. The solder is lead-free and includes silver. The sensitive core module has its own copper plated shielding box.

Time for New Standards

The digital music reproduction over the years challenged the analogue technology to deliver better phono components. This improvement process should not be limited by old standards. In this sense an un-balanced phono input circuitry is no longer state-of-the-art. With all the limits in noise and the related detail resolution it limits in-depth listening. All aspects of the circuitry should serve dynamic fine resolution over the whole frequency range for really unveiling the advantages of Vinyl-reproduction. Part of this philosophy is the abandonment of global feedback for RIAA and other amplifiers. Then music can blossom and capture our emotions while being relaxing; leading us into a different world, touching and possibly even seducing us…

One truly uncommon concept is a CD transport with belt drive. Why should a belt drive be applied although almost all other CD players work with direct drive?

Measurement results alone don’t really serve as a good decision maker, but this was already true in analogue ages: In measurement tests the direct drive turntables outperformed the belt drive, but in terms of sound within the higher grade class of turntables belt drive types clearly outperformed their direct driven counterpart.

BDCD1.1 Mechanism

In the case of CD players the situation seems to be quite similar. There is one difference: While turntables rotate with a constant velocity, a CD player constantly adjusts the speed depending on the play time position for a constant data stream. Sometimes this fact is regarded as an argument against belt driven CD players, but the speed changes are slow and continuous and thus a belt drive can technically manage this challenge. Rapid changes in speed just happen during title skip. Naturally a belt driven, flywheel-type CD player reacts somewhat slower here. But sacrificing a higher level of musical enjoyment for faster track access timesmay very well be too disadvantageous a sacrifice.

 

Superlink & SPDIF Interfaces
BDCD2 Terminals

Instead of transmitting digital audio signals via the established SPDIF-compatible interfaces (AES/EBU 110 Ohm, coaxial 75 Ohm and optical Toslink) there is the exceptional and consequent “Superlink”. Unlike SPDIF transmission the different digital audio signals are not merged to one single signal stream and decoded to separate signals again after being received by the DAC.

SPDIF surely makes sense from a commercial point of view, but Superlink is the solution without compromise. It requires four interconnection cables but skips any coding process. Left/right-clock, bit-clock, digital audio music data are transmistted from the CD-transport to the DAC while the master-clock is generated inside the DAC and sent to the CD-transport. The transmission is done with four 75-Ohm BNC cables with impedance matching. Superlink results in a more intense link to the music, wider and more realistic sound-stage, more details and beautiful sound colors.

B.M.C.’s CD transport uses an advanced switching power supply, with active primary voltage filtering and separate transformers for display, motor, logic and audio circuitry on digital and analogue domain.
Additionally there is complex voltage stabilisation separately in front of each functional group.

CD Player Version BDCD2

By adding the digital-to-analogue converter module the belt drive CD transport can turn into a complete CD player with analogue output.

The digital signal performance is optimized by a clock synchronization circuit right in front of the DAC-Chips. All digital signals are re-timed to the local master clock and thus the point of lowest jitter is at the DAC-Chip where the analogue music signal is made. The conversion is made by two 32-Bit / 758kHz TI/Burr-Brown PCM1792 chips with current output.

The output current is filtered and converted to an output voltage by discrete, fully balanced I/V converters, which operate feedback free. Thanks to the special “Current Injection” circuitry a maximum of sound quality is preserved, which is buffered with the unmatched “LEF” driver circuit keeping all the sonic details.

Originally those circuits were designed to put focus on the sound quality and leave the measurement specifications second, but the present standard is on a level that leaves no need for such a choice: Both are top level and the sound is in a class of its own.

The B.M.C. DAC 1 is not only a digital-to-analog converter, but also serves as a preamplifier and the control center of a consistent B.M.C. chain.

Accurate timing separates the men from the boys in the world of digital audio. This is where Superlink comes in. In addition to standard SPDIF inputs, the DAC 1 offers B.M.C.’s proprietary Superlink connection between itself and the BDCD 2. Superlink is an uncompromising digital connection that employs four separate BNC cables, one per clock and one for the digital audio signal, with the master clock very near the digital/analog conversion.

The DAC 1’s asynchronous high-resolution USB input generates the music data stream just in front of the D/A conversion. The DAC 1’s high-precision master clock is right next to the D/A-converter and creates the ideal foundation for a perfect time-corrected digital signal that produces a more natural sound than other DACs.

On the analog side, the signal-current from the D/A converter is transmitted to the output voltage inside a distortion-free Current Injection input and Load-Effect Free circuit with an extremely short signal path. The result: no “digital” sound.

The DAC 1 becomes the center of a high-end audio system through its preamplifier function. This can be accomplished with a classical preamplifier section for variation of the output signal or, in a B.M.C. component chain, by leading the audio signal straight to the B.M.C. power amplifier. The volume level is set at the DAC 1, and transmitted through an optical connector to the power amplifier, where the gain is adjusted. Result: Perfect lossless volume control.

Although specifying this component as a “digital to analogue converter” is certainly correct in technical terms, we feel it is actually rather a true B.M.C. = “Binary to Music Converter”

Computer-based Audio of the Highest Quality Using the New Asynchronous High-Resolution USB Input

Integrating a computer into the audio system is becoming increasingly important, and opens up audio systems to high-resolution digital audio. B.M.C.’s proprietary Superlink between CD players and DACs sets a benchmark in this regard. The USB input yields an even more advanced measure.

The music stream for standard USB transfers is generated in the computer, but its quality depends on internal computer clocks not optimized for audio. Fortunately, the USB protocol allows a solution: the so-called asynchronous mode.

In asynchronous mode, USB music streaming is not synchronized to the computer’s internal clocks, but by an external device, as in the B.M.C. DAC 1. The possibility of external clocking gives the DAC 1’s asynchronous high-resolution USB input the ability to deliver better sound. It enables the DAC 1 to receive digital audio data from the computer then clock the data using a high-precision device. In addition, the data stream is created directly in front of the actual digital/analog conversion. The circuit, more elaborate than a standard USB circuit, provides a consistent jitter-free data stream, sampling frequencies up to 384 khz, and resolutions up to 32 bit.

This makes it possible to transmit modern recording-studio standards via USB from the computer. Many recording studios and musicians are already providing high-resolution music files online. The DAC 1’s asynchronous high-resolution USB input makes it possible to listen to high-resolution music as it’s meant to be heard.

The DAC 1’s high-resolution USB port reproduces the naturalness and flow of a purely analog playback source, while adding the operating convenience of computer audio and the depth of information available in high-resolution digital recordings.

An innovative, naively low-distortion amplifier circuit without overall negative feedback loop.

Audio engineering gets exciting when following a completely new path with new challenges. There truly was a need for a better solution for music amplification, simply by realizing that the claim of negative feedback loop circuit amplifiers is the complete correction of any error, which implies all those amps would sound perfect and exactly the same – Obviously this was never even close to be true. In the 1990’s Carlos Candeias did extensive research for analyzing and improving the dynamic behavior of a negative feedback loop. But after some successes with improvements he realized that this is a dead end of eternal compromises, which is not the aim of high-end audio representing the spirit of true natural music reproduction.

 

Open Amplifier

 

A fresh approach and a new idea led to a new circuitry which solves the distortion problems by removing their cause, instead of trying to correct distortion afterwards. Therefore a negative feedback loop is obsolete with all it’s unwanted “contributions” to the music reproduction. This revolutionary circuit we call LEF = Load Effect Free, since the music signal voltage source, which determines the sound quality, is freed from voltage and current swing, so it perfectly delivers the music signal to the speakers.

The significant transistors just care about the music signal, but never delivers any power. Everything related to power is handled by separate external circuits and the unloading of power from the signal voltage source removes the cause of distortion.
